Habituation's Web

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Not long ago, franchised hope cycled periodically, but always with more fervor every four years in November. In the coming week, we're faced with a more fervent 2-year version than any time in history. (Image by Pinterest)

Habituation’s Web

Habituation eased into town long ago.
Thought to be natural, it was.
Praised as stability, it was.
Embraced as destiny, it was.

Procreation ruled the nights,
delivery rooms the days.
Time passed and like flies to a sugar fix,
habituation swarmed bank tellers on payday,
local bars on Friday night,
churches on Sunday.

Workweek habits continued.
Harassment ‘round the water cooler.
Ass kissing ‘round the bosses.
Entitlement ‘round the calling-in-sick phone.

Then something happened.

Times got rough.
Unemployment rose.
Businesses shut down.
Preachers sought donations elsewhere.
Habituation stumbled out of town.

Darkness became the memory of enticement.
Silken webs hung furtively,
linking unlit lamp posts to shattered neon signs,
side streets to alleyways,
locked doors to broken windows.

Summer storms passed over
leaving muddy puddles,
their rippled reflections
but gurgling echoes to the moon,
joining other goodbye waves of regret.

Today…

In a political climate of fear,
a new infestation of impassioned hunters
polish their duplicitous glad-hands,
cheering for yet further bounties of false belief,
the lure to buy into the inducement

of both flight and fright,
believing this,
believing that,
unaware that magnetism
is barbed with many disguises.

Perhaps we should remember…

On a clear night,
or a dew-covered sunrise,
just as wings of abalone color
will flicker into habituation's seductive web,
so too might the lure of deception’s entrapment of dreams,
like the ensnared wings of flies,
become fractured rainbows…

Dangling,

Some habits become ruts that some people get way too used to and too comfortable in. Sad.

Love ya!

Love that "Dangling," word, Odin. This is good even thought politics surfaced to spoil a perfect poem. Of course I was looking for something up your sleeve, Heh.Heh

It is interesting that the root word of habitation is habit. We all find comfort in the habit. Even if our habits are bad. So it may be good that we are or can be occasionally, shaken out of our habits into new realms where we can look back at them and change. Old habits die hard. It will take some convincing to get people on the right track and away from, "the good old days." It's always been that way.

Your choice of the word 'habituation' - being abnormally tolerant to, and dependent on, something that is psychologically and physically habit-forming; especially alcohol or narcotics - adumbrates that much of the human race is under some kind of mass delusion, an erroneous belief system, that is taking it down a path towards destruction. I remember my father telling me time and time again when I was growing up that 'if the world could be just like him it would be a better place'. He was delusional. It seems no (earthbound human), up to now, Nov 2 2018, has offered a truly acceptable, and tangible, alternative to the woes of humanity. Interesting thoughts, Odin. All the best. r

The world and all the people in it change, but the integrity of nature and all its promises stay the same. The "fractured rainbows" are ours, not nature's problem.
