Echoing Small Things

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As the day of thankfulness approaches, perhaps we’ve replaced gratitude of life, with gorging our beings with turkey and the suffocation of stuffing and pie as accepted “thank you Lord” pentent lethargy, allowing TV’s football violence as the only means of keeping us conscious, or at least, awake. Think about that. (Image by pinterest)

Echoing Small Things

To step on a ladybug

Is to inflict self-mutilation

To wipe a spider’s web away

Is to hinder the simple value of patient survival.

To lift a sparrow’s egg from the nest

Is to abuse Nature’s province of sanctity.

To remove a toy from a chinchilla’s cage

Is to disregard life’s simple rewards.

To ignore the small voice within

Is to obviate breath’s moral compass pleading.

Echoes are forever,

Knowing only the perpetuity of beginnings.

Yet…

How quickly we choose to forget the small things

Echoing forever as part of the cosmic-one within,

Within.

Within.

It's no small wonder that you conjured up thoughts of all the insects that I have killed. But then, nature designed for the smaller things on the menu of the food chain to be highly productive and, therefore part of the food chain's strength. The sparrow makes many nests and has many offspring to offset the number that are killed naturally every day in the simple act of a possum stealing in a sparrowhawk catching its daily snacks.

A beautiful poem. In remembering small things, we become big.
