Imprisonment

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With all our sentient ability, vacuuming our atmosphere of progress-enhanced toxicity remains a challenge, save for those who only see progress, blind to the suffocating costs designed for greed’s perpetuity. (Image from etsy)

Imprisonment

Ghostlike it gathers,
This once earth-hovering presence,
Rising in lock-step high above,
Amassing its density of might.

How innocent once,
This source of warmth and comfort.
We campfire this.
We stove-cook that.
Combusting its essence way back,
Giving Henry Ford a shout out,
Still echoing through each graying dawn.

Because status quo marches dissatisfied…

Flames become a contagion,
Partnering with envy,
Infecting 3rd world minds,
Into a diseased compliance.

“We too can burn our way
Into 1st world prominence.”

Village mind-sets continue to become
Small town conversions,
Become city mutations,
Become global malignancy.

Higher and higher
Rises competition’s flotsam,
Merging greed with ambition,
Committing atmospheric genocide.

To listen carefully
Is to hear civilization’s nescience
Echoing faintly as it
Enriches the skyward footprints.

Such a war of ignorance
Knows not that the consensus of science
Is but a first step in the race to heal imprisonment
Before suffocation silences Nature’s willingness to forgive.

You covered the nascent problem so well. Once an organization grows to megalithic portions, it is self fulfilling, regardless of the consequences.

I thought of General Motors, like so many corporations, agile by downsizing to prevent bankruptcy. Always thinking in the short term--next year's profits--when the problems ahead of us are very long-term. I am reading an article by Ralph Nader suggesting that those of us in the know about what the real problems are should be spending our money in that direction, for the whole enterprise operates on money and when customers dry up by not buying, they change quickly to what will get customers back again.

Lots of powerful imagery in this poem! But I think the line that catches my interest the most is the simplest—"Because status quo marches dissatisfied…"
We humans are never satisfied...even with "success," perhaps most especially with success. We must change, strive, encumber, rule, ruin, and improve... Strange we are. Thanks for sharing.
