Journeyed Twirly Things

Remembering the Foss balance and motion kits in school, for the fortunate the lessons continued to transcend the obvious into adult life. (Image by kinwicked)

Journeyed Twirly Things

Loneliness,
The ever-aware sadness never knowing,
Did stumble about untouched
Awaiting enigma’s shadow
To enter into the light.

Came that special day
It did awaken,
As curled atop summer grass
The young boy made simple discovery.

So unadorned came the moment,
As laying upon his back,
A mere release of breath
Sent dandelion umbrellas afloat,
Their landing a graceful message upon his chest…

“Awaken your heart,”
Did they whisper,
“For challenge awaits
beyond youthful innocence.”

So many years trailed behind,
Where among trampled grasses of trial and error
Memory’s favorite messenger,
This weed of delicate flight,
Remained his companion of conscience,
Childhood’s compassionate gift.

How precious was discovery,
Introduced once as a gently airborne twirly thing

Landing quietly as a weathered warrior in waiting called love,
Becoming a remembered protection for man's vulnerable tenderness...
Within.

The only part of loneliness that I read in this
artful tale is how to avoid it by recalling tender
moments brought about by something as apparently
insignificant as a tiny touch: "The weed of delicate
flight" and "childhood's compassionate gift" can be
gentle but powerful reminders of passions long suppressed.
Another story well told.

I don't know what Foss and motion kits are, but I am aware of the dreaded dandelion and every kid's joy in spreading its seed by the wondrous blowing of seedlets to float in the air and seed the neighbors' lawns.

So, I'm having a hard time linking the metaphor to loneliness. Childhood, yes… Loneliness, no.

Funny how so small a thing can become our "companion of conscience" reawakening our child's eyes all through life. Acorns and autumn leaves do much the same for me. Beautifully said.

The poem has a sweet innocence that recalls the innocence of childhood. Beautifully written.
