New Year's Silent Screaming

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As the new year approaches, it’s hard to not think of the late-night Manhattan subway, as it remains what it has always been, uniquely vacuous, yet with the ability to soothe one’s feeling of aloneness when focus is brought to the often elusive company of the 5 senses. But of course, one has to will those senses awake sometimes.

New Year’s Silent Screaming

Standing on the platform…

From a deep tunnel’s darkness,
dirt and ammonia waft their
ancient odors of industry
along tracks rumbling,
tunnel wind rushing forward,
raising anticipation,
quivering the space in front of him,
breakneck thunder coming to a stop
inches from his face.

Inside…

The submarine-like air

tastes of hunger unabated,
illumined metal radiates fluorescent green,
and embellishes his ride through darkness,
to somewhere… anywhere.

Such is his subway of grace,
enfolding him with intimate anonymity
while his identity remains unknown,

silent under an island of rock

impervious to the pain of silent screaming.

Underground and alone sums it up. If you without friends on New Year's Eve it's one lonely place to be. My brother told me. "Don't stare at anyone in the subway. They might attack you." So I didn't, but the five senses you mentioned did come into play.

I know that "tunnel wind rushing forward". I have been there (back and forth to Columbia U on the upper (very upper) Westside! Many a lonely night riding the subway in terror and anticipation.
