Yesterday's Tomorrow

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Scientists on Thursday, January 24, 2019, announced the discovery of a fossilized human jawbone in a collapsed cave in Israel that they said is between 177,000 and 194,000 years old. The find may suggest that Homo sapiens first migrated out of Africa at least 50,000 years earlier than previously thought. I was left wondering further of Carl Sagan’s perspective of life as we know it, this infinitesimal participation in perpetual existence.

Yesterday’s Tomorrow

Frozen tundra now voicing
my slide through time,
once rivers of fire,
holding screeches made mute.

My burial made proper
by laws unspoken,
unread,
unknown,
left unrequited,
raise unanswered questions.

Might my mother be
within hardened water beneath,
that by eclipsed radiant sunlight
once hid me from molten red?

Had father gone absent,
made angry with Nature's wrath,
found bow and arrows useless,

but for kindled flames?

As adult,

were there broken ice crystals once shrouding
this peaceful grave layered under time,

and more time?

With this hidden history unveiled,
will weather continue furthering
the persistence of Matter,
maintain this spinning gyroscope
of perpetual chance,
this master of preservation
unfettered by modern inquiry?

Will Nature hold proud,
protecting my other parts,

once resonant with motion,
now but echoes of dissonant shifting,

until darkness of light submits

to unveiling more ancestral memories
by Ends that continue discovering for
more informed Beginnings?

Beyond…

Where so much once was,
will yesterday’s tomorrow

continue to reveal creation’s ancient story

that nothing is forever,

save the cyclic nature of existence?

Thank goodness we are beyond Piltdown Man and Bigfoot, piece by piece putting together the puzzle that is us… Having lived on this fragile planet for so long, barely leaving a trace. But like, an onion, we are gradually peeling back the very essence of our existence.

Everything and everybody, in my humble opinion, has a cycle that must take place for reasons and secrets that must be kept. Your words take me deep into thought and it just never ends, my man!! Very cool!

Love ya!

You raise questions after questions, my friend. Questions which beg for answers. We can speculate all day long, but one thing is abundantly sure . . . Our bones will one day be found somewhere, somehow. Enjoyed this read.
