Atavistic Barbarity

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Atavism is a term rooted in evolutionary study, referring to instances when an organism possesses traits closer to a more remote ancestor, rather than its own parents. This is but one way to remind us of our little bragging rights humanity can truly claim re: civilility. For example: Spain traces its origins to 711 A.D., with the first official bullfight, or "corrida de toros," being held in honor of the coronation of King Alfonso VIII. Once part of the Roman Empire, Spain owes its bullfighting tradition in part to gladiator games. Bullfighting is a constant reminder of how little all civilized societies have learned beyond cultural stuckedness.

Atavistic Barbarity

Center ring…

A majestic bull,

Dun-colored creature,

Arching horns,

Ponderous dewlap shuddering,

Neck shaking with steel-barb sticks

Hooves dragging dust painfully,

Vapor cloud enveloping nostrils,

Rolling black eyes,

Torero stands motionless,

His ballet form of sequined gold and silver,

prepares the muleta

Bull’s head appearing monstrous,

Unimaginably vast.

They stare at each other,

Breath fogging the chilly air,

Before beginning the final dance.

A lateral arabesque,

A stomp of front legs,

Furious explosion of dust,

A lower head,

A charge,

A dodge.

Another turn,

Charge,

Slide.

Bull darts left,

Defies matador’s swirl,

A flick of the bull’s ears,

A toss of its head snorting,

A roll of eyes,

Ecstasy of fear and fury,

Black hooves sending skyward

Steady eruption of stones and dirt.

Muleta in left hand,

Sharp pointed sword in right,

Bull charges,

Matador plunges fatal thrust,

Estocado.

Suffering beast…

Exhausted creature

Pawing clumsily at ground,

Skin rippling with a long torturous tremor

Ears lay flat on huge skull,

Two long strands of spittle dangle from its mouth

A final shudder,

Lowered head,

Eyes sadly rolling,

Slumps and falls to its side

A creature reduced from primitive icon

To grotesque and pathetic corpse,

Legs stiffly crooked like broken planks,

Eyes finally shuttering closed by settling dust.

Crowd cheering,

Flowers jettisoning,

Matador bowing.

And we...?

The stuff Hemingway loved. I recall a documentary I saw about 1966 that was a compilation of matadors being gored and killing bulls over and over again. I don't recall the name of the documentary but the whole idea was for the viewer to see how stupidly brutal the whole affair was.

Speaking of atavistic genealogy, I believe I discovered two Neanderthals in my life of people watching. A fellow instructor at my alma mater and my brother-in-law! Throwbacks for sure!
