Neon Sophistry

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Having just returned from a weekend in Vegas where we saw an under whelming rock concert with Aerosmith, and an over whelming performance of Cirque du Soleil in “O”, I was made to contemplate with my people watching how all were bathed in neon color. Ever notice how some colors soothe the mind, while other antagonize the passions? Still others remind us of how futile our quest is to avoid fearing the mind and passions. Perhaps the annoyance of a flickering neon is but a reminder to us that we have a choice of color to live by. (Image by Rob Carter)

Poem Artwork

Neon Sophistry

Viewing humanity’s choice of color identity,

the neons of life come in demanding hues,
the purple haze of memories
flickers upon the green of regret,
the orange of pain.

How demanding these colors,

making many defenseless to their impact,

the wash of colors coalescing into a blur

of lost identity so prevalent at the tables,

the slots,

the bar games.

Conscious senses reel with confusion
where purple invades green
and battles to become red,
the passion that stares back for honesty.

Running past the many neons of life solves nothing,

save the disappearance of red,

our blood grounded color of passion

a lift from the palette that asks only for honesty.

Somehow, I had "visions" of the Norther Lights while reading your description of the colors, Odin! In your last verse, you mention the "disappearance of red"...........the most rare. Great write again!

Love ya!

I just returned from a ship with gambling. There is the noise of the slot machines, the colored lights, the Stoic dealers waiting for someone to come and lose their shirt where the house always wins. After watching three performances of Cirque du Soleil it gets a little old. Especially when the performers start falling taking tremendouss risks high above the performing floor.

I have found that watching several performers recently from the sixties and seventies that they do a phenomenal job. I will remember not to catch a performance of Arrowsmith. I think I would be disappointed with the Stones as well.

Colors do arouse emotions, but I had not thought much
about them until reading this poem. And where but in LV
would they clash, complement, or stir with so much intensity.
Glad you enjoyed the Cirque du Soleil in "O."

Colors are very significant. In prisons, the prisoners are much calmer with soft colors like peach or beige verse bright reds and yellows that mean stop and caution. Well said!

As astute observation, color plays a remarkable role in our lives. Where would we be without the blue of sky and the black of night.
