Only When I Sleep

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Adoption is a dichotomy of emotions as one ages. Sometimes after a somber night of disturbing images, I’m left with no morning recourse but to ground the night’s dreams through pen and paper, hoping such working of the persistent inner-voices will rid the dreams of darkness. Only When I Sleep

It happens only when I sleep,
this continual visit,
persistent natal-hex,
but who?
who?

How blurred the window,
where beyond exists but penciled outlines,
where wings fold into scabbards,
a believed blessing turns to derision,
an ethereal voice ruptures.

My own faceless Venus of Willendorf,
peering down one last time,
this empty picture above my milk home,
such delicate whispers from infinity's shadows.

Darkness follows…

Like a hex upon this desire,
an innate need to connect with the maternal essence of one,
finding all too often delusion's solace,
union seduced with rings becoming but melted gold
beneath battlefield's delirium.

I close my eyes to wonder.

Why this requited desolation?

Why am I pleading for tonight's slumber to bring peace,
to deliver redemption's sweet breath,
to find deeper excavations beneath this darkness unknown?

When I try to pry open the hands of my own suppressed scream

 pressed tight into curated nightmares,

 echo continues,
rejection following behind like a looming prescient shadow,
a gas chamber's taunting,
poisoning further my once swaddling rebuff of long ago.

The ever-present blurred window persists,
allowing my adoptive mother to hold tight the rejected bundle
peering up suckling my bottled containment,
my home of another kind,
providing survival's meaning.

How soft the vanishing repose.

How brief this embracing heart.

It happens only when I sleep.

Sleep can be weird but lack of sleep is just puzzling. Fortunately, I sleep like a baby. Must be all the exercise I do.

been there and felt just that, I agree with Ron, research may show only a few seconds...when some seem to go for hours.

I can only say that since I discovered that Tylenol Arthritis Strength saves me many sleepless nights.

You wrote a mountain about fitful sleep. Last night, I had one of those nights. The simple act of replacing my front gate and fence became a taunting challenge that seemed unsurmountable between waking up every hour and a half all night, trying to dispatch that weird circumstance from my mind. I read recently where most dreams last only 1 to 2 seconds. Then, why do mind seem to hang on for hours in loops that never quite find and ending point.

My goodness. What a situation to be in! I send out arms to hug you and tuck you in, Odin. Oh, how this poem moved me!

Love ya!
