Once but a Teardrop

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As the Venezuelan crisis escalates, such hearkens to a repetition of the past seeming to repeat for the foreseeable future. Once again, another corrupt leader imposing massive grief, while the next in line continues to provide hope of simple realizations begging for a quiet time. (Image by The Wall Street Journal)

Poem Artwork

Once but a Teardrop

Of joy,

of achievement,

of rest,

of dreams to come.

Now but another reflection so small,

so tender in its plea,

resting on so many cheeks,

as invisible forces go unchecked.

This…

Our universal mirror refracting the jettisoned smiles,

the joy of a child's first touch of a mother's cheek,

a grandmother's tenacity to survive,

any creature's helpless struggle amidst the bombs

behind the eyes of hate,

the bullets beneath the cursed lips of terror-speak,

the smoke of mindless angst.

One could ask and contemplate many answers.

Perhaps we need not search any further,

this malady of man,

this apathy yearning for consciousness.

Perhaps we need only to focus

and listen to our breath,

as it slowly echoes the buried cries,

the resonance of birth,

the gift of life,

all while the tear that once was but a teardrop,

slowly forms yet another glistening ever so small

as a beacon in the dark.

This is an ugly world! I have grandchildren of voting age who are fed up with the status quo as well as their friends. The think that "we" are stupid for not paying attention to global warming. Yes, there is that "beacon in the dark" and they are many. Great write, Odin!

Love ya!

Yes, why is it that our familial, tribal tendencies put us at odds with others. Honor those in high places underserved, but arrived by family ties or cruel manipulation. Wherever a schism between the wealthy and the poor is created with a two tier economic system, a breakdown will come and the innocent will suffer the most as collateral damage of war. I cry for those caught in that crossfire.

But you certainly planted a light of hope in those last few lines. Innocence grown wise by conflict, may be our best hope yet.

The sad realities of the world continue. Fine write.
