Pensive

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Times change very little for the downtrodden. Park benches, cardboard boxes, cold sidewalks, and the few landing an indoor cot now and then.

Poem Artwork

Pensive

Pensive is

When disappointment pauses

While sadness decides.

Pensive is

When layered clouds

Crisscross a setting sun

And night feeding Conch shells

Disappear beneath daytime sand

Pensive is

A beachside Mission neon misfiring

Chaotic red and white

While the homeless inside

Bury faces in pillows.

For one this night…

Pensive was

The shroud of loneliness

That finally suffocated hope

Voiding his bout with happiness.

Pensive will continue

As long as homeless suffering remains

Any city’s low priority.

Ya know! I can't see why a few can't get straight enough to get together, maybe three of them or four, go to a place where they hand free clothes out (they have them!), get jobs someplace, anyplace, and get a room together. It's just a thought. I feel so badly for a lot of them as I've volunteered a bit and have listened to some stories that made me humble. I could go on.......

Love ya!

Jane

While the rich get richer, the poor become homeless. If there was profit in it, there wouldn't be homelessness.

Stark images. The picture reminds me of skidrow in downtown San Diego; in areas of Oceanside as well. I read yesterday that 7 out of 10 Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless. I wonder if that's accurate. Hard to wrap your head around it, if it is. Being homeless seems like living in a post-apocalyptic world; the down-trodden on the outskirts of society. It's such a devastating disassociation with reality, perhaps similar to what happens with people on their iPhones. Thank you Odin for sharing your gift. You've been a blessing to me for many years. Richard
