Fearful Dreamer

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We all know someone who finds sleep difficult, who fears dreams that haunt him or her. A mirror must be an uncomfortable reality for anyone ill-prepared to face their demons. Daytime often affords little respite. (Image by albini-bambard)

Poem Artwork

Fearful Dreamer

In his room of shadows,

A middle of the night insomniac,

Works his hide-and-seek game

Requiring he approach sideways,

As these sentinels of truth, we call mirrors,

Are ever alert.

A full-length lens of honesty,

Framed and cradled in ancient oak,

It stands erect,

Stalwart in purpose,

As he sneaks a view of its blank-wall vision,

Making sure his own image is to the side,

Hidden from reflective reach.

Such is hide-and-seek insomniac-nature

Of a fearful dreamer with nocturnal eye

Spying on the ruminant glass that knows only truth,

His most feared reality forcing careful movement about the vacuous room,

Avoiding the window threatening dawn as long as possible.

Shadows may hide his distressing reality from the never-sleep mirror,

But at daybreak, his protective sanctum will be exposed,

Affording little playroom to extend the game,

Still not willing to face his threatening dreams.

The one without sleep steals to the daytime sanctuary under his bed.

I find my wakeful dreams much more interesting than my nighttime dreams which I rarely remember, except of the nightmarish kind that happen very infrequently. But your poem speaks of dreams of another sort that the recipient cannot face.

what are you hiding or running from? it feels as if, you've been explaining yourself in words that also act as a wall. is it your heart? if it is, then this is one of life's great paradoxes. or it could just be me, i didnt mean to be intrusive, but intrigued. and as always, lovely poetry.

Reads as though from experience. I believe we all have dreams. And I believe we all have bad dreams except, perhaps, psychopaths and sociopaths who have no bad thoughts or remorse for things that they do. Researchers are beginning to find that their brains are wired differently than most.

So when you and I talk about troubling dreams, we are writing and talking about the interpretation process while we are having a dream that often comes from something during the day that was a conundrum or otherwise unsolved. It can also be an unsolvable medical condition that haunts us at night. Hence, my constant dreams of having somehow been tossed out of bed and landing on things or people in crushing ways. Downright scary until I wake up.

All true, and they haunt me nearly all the time.
But I always place the blame elsewhere. It helps me
keep my sanity. Very insightful.
