Rope's Tenacity

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We all have at least one thing or person or animal we trust explicitly. For many of us climbers, it’s his/her rope...until it isn't.

Rope’s Tenacity

Fate's regret consoles the past,
While omniscient fear
Remains attached to untried trust.
Such is a climber's palpitant belief,
Inching ever closer to the gambler's down card,
That moment when anchor and reach,
Security and chance,
Agree it's time.

For…

Just as the leaves of Quaking Aspens
Pass their shiver one to another,
Needing little wind or earth's tremble
To actuate survival's incessant vibration,
So too the climber's sentience
Relies on mind's voracious hunger,
Heart's willingness,
And a rope's tenacity.

Tree line to rock face,
Whiteout to summit,
Goal achieved,
Or
Silence.

I'm glad that I only climbed without ropes. Although I was saved one time on loose rock and sliding, when a friend threw me a rope. I think this can be a metaphor for life where one needs a thread of existence to hang onto when about to descend deep or ascend steep.

But I agree that once that rope breaks, or in my case, that spinal cord finally severs, things will get really serious really quick. Probably why my calculus teacher, a Colorado rock climber, said he didn't need to wear a helmet. If the rope failed, a helmet would make no difference anyway.

All I can say is, hang on tight to that rope, and hope.

A fearsome business this mountain climbing. I have read books about it but I can't really understand the mystique. But you are right about one thing, it's all about the tenacity of the rope, literally and metaphorically.
