Pawn Shop Desperation

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We are getting to that point where so much of our society’s possessions of inner worth mean little to the mind-set that only sees such precious treasures as… money. (Image from The Pawnbroker movie)

Poem Artwork

Pawn Shop Desperation

Wanting only justification for his scales,

His preferred routine of weighing precious stones,

The measure of choice sat still

As he placed a magnifying lens to his eye…

On the street of NYC’s many pawn shops,

Icy droplets commenced

As a swarm of black umbrellas

Clouded the street’s view,

An idiosyncratic sign of questionable human behavior.

She leaned forward on the counter,

Her left hand shaky,

Expressing the reason why

The little ring meant so much to her,

As he quickly slid it back…

Two dollar

I've never frequented pawnshops. But I recall being shaken by the movie, The Pawnbroker. I can imagine the desperation that many have, trying to get enough money just for food as they bring their precious memories to the pawn shop, in the desperate hope that they will be able to get them back. That last line is a real clincher.

Your words made me feel the way this lady must have felt along with the warmth in the heart of the gentleman who "handed it back..."! So touching, Odin!!!

Love ya!

Just seeing how cheap stuff can go at an estate auction can make cringe. Something that meant so much to someone, is no longer priceless.

Wow, yes, this can be understood on many levels. Its simplicity belies its depth.
