To Beget Birth

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Sadly, the root cause of the world’s most egregious maladies has as its simple remedy—education and the understanding of unabated population expansion’s consequences. But, until mankind’s priorities align with Nature’s, the planet’s survival will remain but a broken mirror with distorted reflection. (Image by creaativeness.jpg)

To Beget Birth…

To beget birth…
remains man’s neuronal quandary,
the mortal battle with the will of cells
knowing only visionless duty to reproduction.

How vacuous the realm of reason has become.

Where once a species’ knowledge took center stage,
such now slumps in beleaguered shadow,
peering from the wings of relegation,
concerned that re-entrance may never be cued.

Global birth soars unabated,
becoming future’s audience
applauding the world’s dis-ease
as barbarism’s necessary reality.

Such has developed the rationale of deniers,
blind to the seduction of unconscious slavery
where long abandoned synaptic health
drags shackled reasoning into decision’s arena,
awaiting battlement’s continued blood lust,
knowing further defeat rewards history’s next round
of unenlightened self-adulation.

Yes…

Perhaps the notion to beget birth
deserves further thought.

Much, very much to savor here, Odin, and I, for one leaned upon each and every fantastic line. As they say, write on!

A tough subject to broach. Especially since the feeling of love and affection for the helpless birth of babies is so powerful and such a strong instinct in us all. I would have loved to have had children and believe I would've been a good father. But now, looking back, I'm glad that I didn't. For it is selfish to think that giving birth to children is the only contribution one has to make in this life. And it is very selfish to think that having children will make one's life easier with their support and love as we grow older. Why put that burden on our children like so many do?

Your last stanza is very appropriate. All of us, especially those who believe strongly in the right to life, need to think deeply about the consequences of their actions.

An interesting take on a complicated issue. As you say "Global birth soars unabated," the question is what to do about it. The poem doesn't answer the question; but certainly provokes us into thinking about it, in its unique style and imagery.
