Planting Life With Death

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Watching the inspiring funeral of Elijah Cummings this morning, then reading the week-end news, i.e., Barr’s criminal investigation, Kim in North Korea opting for more one on one kiss ass with Trump, Syria’s continued suffering and more troops to guard the oil, Ukraine’s insanity with Putin taking over, one is struck with how patiently Man awaits each new season of life for planting and irrigating both life for the good and death from the inevitable. Such makes one wonder why we choose to always remain on the brink of…

Planting Life With Death

Throughout the night
Maintenance sentries clocked by the hour
Sprinkle roots to spawn further
Their call of duty arcing
From flower bed
To curbside lawn patch
Arrogant tomorrows awash
Their 1% at work

In a different time zone
Thousands of mind-miles Eastward
Bombs and tracer-glow
Arc a different earth
Arid with history’s human mulch
Filling lungs with particles
Dust of bones and flesh
Fed but poison for lifetimes

How sad
This thing called war
Where daily irrigation of its roots
Seeps ever deeper into the erosion
Cycling seeds of hatred and ignorance
Spawning more perpetuated habit
Making yesterday’s season of life
A mere waiting game for
Tomorrow’s death

While here

Cool water runs freely
Sprinkling the healthiest lawns on earth

But…

Do we truly understand

Such symbolic implications?

Your poem presents the dichotomy and the dilemma. For eons, natural disasters, pestilence, and war kept human population in check. But the Industrial Revolution and the realization, like you have of the horror of weapons of destruction, changed that and population grew and grew until, while it seems hopeful of preventing war, where populations exceed the ability to sustain.

We can only hope to end war by simultaneously providing a sustainable lifestyle and cutting population at the same time. Difficult but doable.

You raise an interesting question after your tour through the wasteland of war, and I think I know the answer. . . .

I watched the same funeral service being interrupted periodically by that blithering a-hole on the White House lawn. What a contrast! One a gentle giant of a man who caressed life with passion and compassion; the other a thug who offended his way from money to disgrace to nothing.
