The Ending Once Begun
A few now wander the barrenness
Pausing where they once vanished
Turning
Looking skyward
For what
We can only guess
Today…
The naked trees limbs are swaying
As if in a storm
Even as the air remains dead still
Across the way…
Our old train is still in the station
Still with its dining car
Remember?
We once did dine in that car
Where its white tablecloths
Sparkling glasses
Fresh flowers
Polished silverware
One candle
Made our travel special
Even though it never left the station
Remember?
At least the air is quiet now
Perhaps its afraid to move again
Maybe without movement we’re safe
Strange… those trees acting up a storm
In our empty coach
There’s nothing but burnished walls
Outlining the forever vapor-silhouettes
Strangers once
Now our friendly visitors
Our old friend is at the end of the car
See
He’s waving his pale hand
To the walls
To the barren trees outside still swaying
And then his hand is acknowledging us
Or…
Maybe he’s still trying the check the time
His wristwatch having stopped long ago
Have you noticed…
With such ease we move about now
Weightless movement
Back when it was only a dream
And here we are
Watching others joining the trees in rhythm
Maybe…
For them
The ending once begun
Is still alive and well
C’mon
Let’s take a walk
I think I saw a tree limb motioning us
