Conscience

Everyone has good dreams and bad dreams. Some know too well of nightmares (Image by Dracoureus)

Poem Artwork

Conscience

Conscience, that stalking authority

With its vast reach of spies

Prepares for night’s darkness

Patient for the dreams to appear

Slips surreptitiously under the sheets

Waits to threaten street arrests

Feared jails and prisons

Torture and coerced confessions

Rendering judgment for wee hour sentencing

Frightened of our thoughts

We listen for the alarm clock

Guilt keeps our eyes shackled to our lids

Cicadian minutes keep honesty waiting

As phantom minutes in limbo’s shadow

Await apnea’s next breath

The escape from death by guilt

Sunrise is coming

It never fails you

Your inner voice is readying another day

Anxious to echo through the canyons

Of your dreaded abyss

Morpheus will visit again tonight

Bringing along conscience

The inward monitor that never sleeps

You have brilliantly described how our conscience works on us during our sleep. We can't escape our conscience, always there to check on us. And everyone, even the self-righteous, have good and bad dreams. Better not to suppress the bad ones. They are telling us something we should know. I sleep well at nights when my legs don't bother me from swelling or spasms. And really enjoy the dreams I'm having, especially the ones that I can turn into short stories.

That image you posted reminds me of Moses parting the Red Sea. Maybe he had the help of archangels rather than God. ;-)

Sometimes my conscience makes it hard to fall asleep as I lie there with thought racing through my mind. I wonder how it is for those who seemingly have no conscience that they have to deal with.

It's amazing that so much happens and is at stake, as you describe in this poem, when we are knocked out and virtually asleep. What a mystery.

And so goes the night! I'd love to capture that moment when sleep "happens". "As phantom minutes in limbo's shadow"...........I'm lovin' that phrase! I fell in love with this poem, Odin!

Love ya!

Jane
