Cave Dwellers

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

If one has lived in Manhattan during the 50’s, 60’s, a bit of nostalgia is unavoidable. Even today, Manhattan tenants of lessor means use nicknames to describe their humble abodes. The me of long ago enjoined the trend… oh, so long ago. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Cave Dwellers

The actor was content in his East Village cold-water flat

Better known as “the Cave”

More comfortable than most

With a view of the air shaft.

Adjacent cave

Quiet until the aged die-hard old man

Decided to play his ancient Les Paul knock-off guitar

Yes…

These hole-in-the-wall abodes all had at least one resident spider

Always alert waiting for the next fly

Dumb enough to light upon the cigarette-smoke-clouded web

Mostly shrouded in the shadowed corner

Where reverie found peace

With the maze of woven thread

Contributing a special place of tempered patience

For each day’s dreaded sunrise

When upstairs the sound of bare feet

Slapped across carpet-less floor

Such a cave dweller she

This 3rd floor Gypsy Astrologer

Setting up her day’s mumbo-jumbo charts

Anticipating the next potential dream-addict

To fork over the five-dollar intro fee

And hopefully be forever hooked

On his or her starry destiny

So often

The pre-dawn morning’s silence

Was broken with sobbing coming from the star room

Like a baby crying

In harmony with his own

Knowing well his destiny

Was not to be found through the celestial wonderment

But here among the other struggling artists

The cave dwellers of New York

And of course…

The resident spiders

I believe a very apt description for what starving artists could afford in Manhattan in those days, with the rats and spiders for free. At least you had a spot on the river that sunrise after a walk and pigeons cooing to console you.

Reminds me of the time in 1968 when I investigated living in San Francisco. Everything I looked at was post 1906 and circa 1910 dirty hot water ugly. No walk ups, but the elevators were old and probably unreliable. I quickly retreated down the Peninsula to my cozy efficiency and car spot under the building for at least half the cost with a sunny pool and redwood ambience of Peninsula living.

Having gone to school at Columbia University and lived in NY in the early 70s, I am well familiar with the caves of apartments in the corridors of Manhattan, the streets of which I have walked every inch from the Bowery to Washington Heights! You brought it all back in this remarkable poem.

I see all the streets through your words. Artsy areas draw interesting people all making it, sometimes barely, with the talent they are given. I love your touch of silk and its weaver, Odin!

Love ya!
