Dream-Changing Space

More reflections on how the last year, and perhaps many past years, have fared in the quest for understanding our dreams and aspirational obstacles. (Painting by George Tooker)

Dream-Changing Space

One’s special time,

When fantasizing is all one has
Often brings about chin resting
Upon knees tucked,
Or arms wrapped tight
To be the ball we wish to be.

In our mind’s eye,

Everyone creates a private space,

A changing stall to dream.

How many such moments
Harbor our protected thoughts,
Those times when
Happiness hangs tenuous
Like a spider’s web,
Trusting no harm will come
While trying to anchor
Tomorrow’s hope.

We’ve all been there,
Whether in one’s closet,
Bedroom corner,
Or storeroom darkness as
Child,
Adult,
Senior.

We carry our ruminating enclosure
Upon our backs,
Held tight in prayerful hands,
Often beneath squeezed eyelids

Of torrential purging of disappointment,

Trying to thaw one’s deep freeze of regret.

So vulnerable we feel.

So vulnerable.

When pressure mounts
We usher ourselves into such protected withdrawals

After encountering anxious news,
Inaccurate information,
Unjust results
Faulty decisions
Shattered Hopes
Fears.

Most come by…

Eager bearers of answers.
All with passkeys

To your personal retreat.

Resolve comes at a price.

Remembrance
Brings back painful times.

If fortunate…

Some of us arrive at a different moment,
That time when perhaps
We neither regret the past,
Or fear the future.

We unclasp our grip,
Lift the head of our often-heavy burden,
Spread our arms,
And breathe deeply.

There’s always a first time
To discover that other special space…

Acceptance.

Accepting discovery as precious,
Comes not without pain,
For assent to enlightenment
Will always be fraught with rocky passage.

But the reaching of honesty’s reward
Is without parallel,
Forging forever
That life exists as moments-in-waiting,
Or moments one allows to live,
Regardless the consequence.

Ah,
The juncture.

The moment lived.

The Be Here Now journey.

Your last line is priceless, Odin! Your words remind me of all of the "special places" in my mind where I could go to hide. "Protected thoughts"? Yes, indeed, my friend.

Love ya!

In this poem you seem to reveal your emotional journey that resulted from all of the regrets in your life that have culminated in the person that you are today. You hinted at the end that while going through these trials, you now are more capable of facing the future.

While I have had turning points, I believe that my life was much safer and less emotional than yours and I'm grateful for that. I hope that as a result of what I have faced and am grateful for the way things are turning out so that I can write positively about the future we all can have, if we just try.

Ron
