Earth Elegies

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

“President Donald Trump on Thursday proposed rolling back enforcement of a landmark environmental law, reducing federal oversight of many major projects, from pipelines to commercial development, to speed the approval process. He said the United States cannot compete "if a bureaucratic system holds us back from building what we need.” NBC News. One has to wonder why Nature and Man have such incongruent means of progress. Earth Elegies

The grass,
what little of it grows here
waits patiently behind skyscraper rock.

The spring sun has risen,
one-hour past,
the glacial river
grows the canyon.

It is the day.

How long the grass has watched,
the tree has titled its branches,
the leaves have contained themselves.

But today…

There it is.
The first petal reaching out.
Its stem quivering.
Opening another.
And another,
Spreading open their cover of pride.
An alpine moment.
Another cherished spring.

Leaves applaud.
Grass sways in the breeze.
Urban fowl circle.
Their presence accepted.
Nature is pleased.

Higher above…

A clandestine flight.
A silent covert glide,
from whose wings
comes a sudden burst of toxins.

Into the canyon’s village
erupts the cacophony of death.

The distant mountain’s silence falls dead
behind oil and gas flame-filled smoke rising,
rushing skyward,
chasing sparrows, eagle and hawk asunder.

Thousands of miles away…

Cheers of success.
“Package delivered, Glorious Chosen One,

who descended from heaven.”
Men applaud.
Women applaud.

This dissident celebration begins

and ends for the day.

The celebrants of ignorance
remaining intellectually unconscious

in their final gasp for air.

Excellent write. It all boils down to greed. The rich get richer, and the earth is all the more poorer for it. When will leaders realize that we have to take care of our home before we have no home to live in?

An "alpine moment" indeed. Loved this one for its beauty and its message.

Oh, yes! I believe! Don't drink the water! My father told me a long time ago that the Russians were spraying stuff over all of our water sources. I didn't pay much attention then but...............My father was in the Korean Conflict and an immigrant from Finland at the age of 4 with his family. They became proud Americans and raised us to be the same. (my mother was from Finland but came in through Canada.......), same thing......immediately sought American citizenship after meeting my father.........long story!)

Love ya!

There MUST be a balance. If we can send a man to the moon and back then why can't we have chemicals that don't kill everything in sight! Our once beautiful creek is a mud puddle! All because of farmers run-off. That's pesticide! It kills the fish and it festers and smells like stench and burns the eyes of tourist who pay big buck to swim in the not so polluted waters that are pretty disgusting half the time! All presidents and local politicians turned their heads for the past 35-40 years. Our only prayer is for the young kids in college to develop a water recovery process that will reverse this curse. Amen
