Evolution's Weigh-Station

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It’s very hard to think of a future when so much ignorance as to what it takes to allow the planet’s survival. Yes, dumbed down sentience is getting quite good at self-destruction. (photo by Sammy Slabinnick)

Evolution’s Weigh-Station

From history did we come

Perpetuating,
Did we not.

Yes…

We’ve learned our lesson well,

Mixing and matching genes
To circumvent ourselves,

Arriving at the worldly coliseum,
We battle for blood and death,
Salivating and fist-pumping,
We want…
We wish…
Seldom what we need.

Yet we forge and sharpen
Our out of control desire
For everything of anything.

Leaving DNA scratching its head,
“We put up centuries of twist and shred
For this?”

Of course.

Minds of a higher purpose
Will someday stopover,
Check us out
And pity the evolved mash-up.

A One World Order will greet our planetary visitors
With “Welcome aliens. We are your masters,”
And completely miss
Their dissing of such nonsense.

They’ll leave their rest stop
And move on to another galaxy,

Scratching their “whatever” thinking…

“So primitive.”

Yes, we continue to mess up evolution's progress that made us intelligent like plastic surgery on our minds that made us intelligent in the first place. Unlike plastic surgery, we are passing it on to our children and their children.

When it comes to understanding, we are like disobedient teenagers who never will grow up. It's okay to be innocent. Not okay to be intolerant and stupid. It's time for childhood to end.

If we don't grow up, any intelligent species passing our way will probably pass us by as not worth the effort of saving from ourselves like you have so poetically described.

Enjoyed this space fantasy for its prescience. I often think of what it would be like as a higher being from another planet coming across this mess. So well done. Loved it.

Your use of imagery is astounding, Odin! This "could very well be" situation you describe is becoming more "real" as time goes on. Perhaps there will be another species who will stay and fix us?

Love ya!

Jane
