Freedom’s paradox struggles as a lifelong conundrum. (Image by Chad Knight)

Discovering Oneself

Discovering one’s parents,
is to know the confinement of possession.

Discovering one’s career,
is to know entrapment of the Peter Principal.

Discovering one’s mate,
is to know the tenuousness of identity.

Discovering one’s aloneness,
is to know the loss of contact.

Discovering one’s freedom of choice,

is to know the loneliness of independence.

Discovering oneself,
is to finally accept responsibility of belonging.

Your words ring true, Odin! I believe we spend our lives discovering in one way or another. Life is quite the adventure, isn't it?

Love ya!

The bottom line is, we have to be happy with ourselves, and we have to know who we are to get to that point.

I like the way you go back to basics at the end of this poem. In order to "know thyself", written over the portal to the temple of the oracle of Delphi, one has to first discover oneself. Ditto what Edward said.

Poetry to me is saying much in few words--with
style and grace. But when it also encapsulates life,
love, and purpose in one sweep of the pen, that person
must have arrived from a distant place for the express
purpose of enlightenment. What talent!
