Dreams Need Light

 

Traveling with my parents…

I once dreamed of an endless road
Streaming across an Egyptian desert
Like a holiday ribbon laying out as invitation

 

Years later…


Lined on both sides in store front windows
Mannequin after mannequin beamed with smiles
Pinned of finery in waiting
Suits
Dresses
Gowns
And tuxes

 

Like me of old…


Innocent children
Pressed faces against the glass
Eyes wide with question
Mouths agape with wonder

Little did they know
Whether on 5th Ave
Manhattan's East Harlem

Or adventures yet to unfold

Dreams need light

Especially as yesteryear’s horizons

Fade for the night.

The premise of the poem is perfect and so true. We need light, not just but especially in our dreams.

My dreams are full of light and often in color. But I don't dream of yesterday like your poem suggests, but of the here and now, and sometimes, so close to home that it is scary.

I am trying to reconcile the vanishing point road across the desert with the storefront fantasies that are often placed in department store windows to impress children and make them long time customers.
