Smothering Light

With society’s anxiety at perhaps the all-time high of a lifetime, we have plenty of time to figure out what matters. (Image by Shutterstock)

Smothering Light

Have you ever…

held on the sound of crickets
lamenting the loss of silent darkness?

Those who have…

 Know that the men
who came with their cables of smothering light
destroyed Nature’s songs that once filled the desert air
with the crescendo of the quiet.

Have you ever…

Touched the flame of fireflies
as they huddle in the shadows of scorching neons,

reminding us of the endless pulsation of innocence lost?

Those who have…

Know the sparkle of nature's night watchmen
who may be lost someday in this maze of indulgent corridors.

Have you ever…

Listened to the silent vibration of your essence?

Those who have…

Know well the subtle quivering of cricket and firefly

As you walk the avenues of life's shock and awe,
its searing light and sound show
begging to be noticed,

remember everyone chances to win
or lose,

or revel in just being.

Did you know Vegas before it was Vegas?

Simple existence did.

Let us hope that everyone time to think like you have. Especially, like I did, going out in my suburban neighborhood to find that the traffic noise was gone and the sound of birds twittering and especially the doves, cooing their love songs, yet hidden in the trees.

Unfortunately, electricity was not turned off, and our excessive light pollution, turning night into day, is having its effect on the firefly, as well as us humans, to boot.

No and not really...

As you rightly point out, in noticing (and missing) the elements of nature that surround us help us notice (and miss) elements of nature that exist within ourselves. "Have you ever....listened to the silent vibration of your essence?" If you have, it is as awe-inspiring as the sight of a firefly roaming the free darkness of night.
