For Some

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Changes present renewed forevers…hopefully ingested with a pinch of Socratic irony. Dying is not an option, unless you forget there are options...besides golf. With early retirement attractive for many a teacher, nurse, doctor and other front-line responders to the pandemic, it’s easy to see options of appeal… but are they good for extending your life, or at best, giving you reason to continue living? After all, what is living without the challenge of learning more about what it is to be… yeah… living alive. (Image by Tumbir)

Poem Artwork

For Some

A ball scrubber

polishing boredom pristinely,

followed by a languid silent journey home

astride shiny new Tesla,

‘cause you can,

is a peek at Nirvana…

(which most don’t understand, but repeat at cocktail parties)

To what aim

goes this idle focus,

this compass stuck on south,

wearing a carefree Trump-patented tan

covering webbed veins of translucent aging arrival.

Up the driveway,

mail's monthly 4th Wednesday.

Oh, such a glorious day,

government postage smudged slightly,

trip to the bank,

flirt time.

Sweet smiles at counter

reserved for arthritic hands,

while young nubile fingers

count this month's Social Security allowance

into curious hands.

Off to his ancient favorite club medic,

musty oak-paneled history,

holding court atop stool

of slippery Naugahyde,

incontinence's best friend.

Sexagenarian bartender stands aside,

patiently waiting for this afternoon’s “Reality Show” to end

before asking “What’ll you have, buddy?”

Time glances up at the mirrored audience of one of past years.

The roar of silence.

Retirement bliss for some.

“Double Chivas, clean… the 25-yr. stuff.”

I got something a little bit different than John. This dude is filthy rich. But he paid into Social Security while he worked before taking early retirement. So, since he "earned," it, still takes that Social Security and spends it on important things like golf and "the good stuff" for a mid afternoon drink on his Tesla's road to nowhere.

God bless social security that people pay into all their lives. Where would we be without it.
