If It Happens
Some will run
Some will walk
Some will sleep
But…
As heaviness prevails today
Some carry burdens on shoulders broad
Some pull unfulfilled dreams behind as baggage
Others push heavy grievances uphill trying to stifle Sisyphus history
All will suffer in their own way
If it happens
For just as the mythical tragedies of Greek history
Were never dreamt possible in our time
Catastrophism hangs precariously
Like bamboo scaffolds teetering
Above minuscule people
Wandering about
In their darkness
Now and again
Caught in the headlights
Of oncoming synaptic short circuits
Firing brains of fear and locust-like appetites of consumption
Ultimately regurgitating frenzies of panic and reckless strategies for surviving
The tsunami of hurt
All
Because
It could happen
As we wander precariously into the autumn night
We might be walking with sideway glances at the many causal threats
Or feeling the chill from a hunkered down defense in the back of a careening pickup truck
Speeding to nowhere
If it happens...
Hopefully…
The darkness will accept the dawn of elimination
Bringing reason and rational thought
Back into our species’ resonance.
Looking back in history, the only time that the world was really in peril was during World War II. I will discount the Cold War because it was "unthinkable," and still is. Although some small nuclear power may try a terrorist move, we will survive it like we did 9/11, or in Obama's terms, "absorb it." We are big enough for that. We are absorbing COVID-19, quite well, whether we know it or not.
Aside from the small possibilities of a meteor strike, super volcano, tsunami, really deadly virus like the great plagues of the dark ages or AI, the only real threats we face are global warming and societal meltdown. While there is evidence that world society is threatened by meltdown, it is not really happening in spite of great stress being placed on the lowest of the low. Good deeds are far outpacing bad deeds in the current, temporary adjustment of society.
