Words Struggling

For those of us having words as an intrinsic part of our lives, it is sometimes sad to think of those who don’t. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Words Struggling

Words suffocate

If kept breathless between

The front and back cover binding.

Like flowers surrounded by weeds

Purposeful words today struggle to be valued

Amidst the memes and acronyms

Catering to impatience and minimal attention spans.

Word-subtext of meaning,

Like the soil rich roots of flowers,

Go unnoticed as

Sudden realization of the surface

Makes color and fragrance

All sensory awareness

Can handle.

And often totally forgotten,

Towering above the flowers,

Reality reveals the sheltering roof of darkness

Drawing us inward.

Yet…

Like words trying to motivate us to turn the page,

We might not open the door,

Or develop the foundation,

Or shape the stones to support the home.

And if not…

The house might be closed up now

Like a book relegated to the top shelf of a stack,

Gathering cobwebs of idleness,

And dust motes of disregard.

I'm with you about those who cannot express their thoughts on paper. I immediately recalled a very active (tried to start an Adapt chapter in Houston) quadriplegic who sent me his life story on one page. There was so much more that he needed to say but couldn't before his life was cut short by the slings and arrows that fortune dealt him. His voice was much stronger than mine in public, but he didn't leave many words of encouragement behind like so many others in the disabled activism ranks like Christopher Reeve have.

But your observation of multitasking social networking is so true. 150 character bursts of shortcuts does not make a thought very deep at all. With all the richness of language available, so many are avoiding it altogether with phrases like, "you know?" As if we already know what they are trying to say or write, so we don't have to in our lazy way of communicating.

Us poets, all we have are words. Let's hope they are as meaningful as yours.
