We Windows of the Wall

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

1/24/21 - another examination of human compartmentalizing by reason of taught necessity, not all of which is bad; we need protection from the elements, marauders. We need security, a place we can be alone, a private place, yes. We are special, each and every one of us..."every man and every woman is a star," to quote Aleister Crowley a bit. But, the walls that entrap us are the key points to be examined here, I believe, the walls constructed via the mortar of lies. The windows some of us have come to construct have been built through the blood, sweat and tears of hard living, of living through battles and the spinning wheels of true fate as finally found in the battles.” - Berkey

We Windows of the Wall

We're special,
so we're told,
we windows of the wall.

With loneliness the price,
we endure,
for out there
our escape hatch,
through which
every eye beholds
vast dreams,
is deemed priceless,
so we're told.

Our genesis began as escape,
holes in cave walls,
lean-tos,
boat hulls,
hovel,
and castle.

Today…

We idle our time,
our bodies anxious,
hospital aisles our waiting rooms.

Soon…

Hazmat suits and zip bags
will place an unlucky adopted
in a cold truck,
delivery bound.

Then…

Many of us
will accept others neglect,

don our masks

and await more endings
missing the clear-pane joy
of witnessing our first night
with eyes of glass.

We'll trust we're now safe
embraced by walls,

some of cloth,

some of rock,

some of glass.

Shields…

A roof,
for prevention.

A loving home,
our protection.

So we're told.

Taught we were,
so astute our shamans.

Yet of late,
time has spread
our tomorrows

into a reality of doubt
with extremists warning,
as outside grows dark with
the sightless eclipse of mind,
blindness of heart,
perhaps rendering void
any call for
we windows of the walls.

I prefer living in a house of glass with no secrets. But most people don't and closer binds tightly every night. Psychologists have learned that we are born with only two fears: loud noises and falling. All of the rest are conjured up by our indoctrination starting with our families, our peers and our institutions.

To an extent you and I have escaped all of those and the rumor, gossip and falsehoods that lead us into the traps of not recognizing our folly when we do not pay attention to the science of infestation, contagion, or other danger that we allow others to tell us how to deal with.

The more transparent our existence less likely we will fear.
