Today's Hollywood

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Rather than a harsh indictment, the following is a reflection of my 50 years working and witnessing all that the art of cinema became, even as some tried so hard to retain what it once was. In 2021, we find ourselves ossified into the blasting caps of yet another decade of explosions for the anesthetized mind set of… well, you tell me. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Today’s Hollywood

Where reflections in the Ivy mirror reflect only the shield defending the hidden person
Where the reserved table sounds of joy are but the soul-sludge evacuation of fear
Where the touch upon the "deal" shoulder as one leaves the ostentatious office means captivity

The Real Hollywood

When lonely nights lead prematurely to inevitable doubts anesthetized by "means."
When such nights are innocently the result of the isolating success you aspire
When the Nebraska cornfields beneath summer moonlight will remain the unredeemable past

The Real Hollywood

The How of virtue lost forever
The How of integrity reduced to whatever it takes
The How of dreams captured by the pimps of waste--the masqueraders of daytime nightmares

The Real Hollywood

Once knew of magic accessible to everyone
Once knew that empowering imagination could sell tickets of quality
Once understood that people trusted the cinematic connection with creative energy

Was for the audience

The Real Hollywood

Is rapidly fading into indifference
Is becoming remiss in its responsibility to influence for positive action
Is but a translucent super-imposition of the confused
Wishing to be... a fascist shackling of hostages...or hopeful attempts

Sometimes thwarted

Often embraced in desperation

The Real Hollywood

What might it be
Were it fed by wordsmiths
Of honesty and truth?

Lest we forget,

Citizen Kane paved the way for unadulterated cinematic imagination

Might we return to such creative demands?

Is tomorrow’s reel of expression worth watching?

Hopefully

A very creative, thoughtful, critique of the entertainment
industry, past and present. As passive viewers of Hollywood's
products, we (the audience) rarely have the pleasure to read
and to assimilate an in-depth portrait such as this from one who
has devoted his life's work to making to the whole panoply of
creative entertainment. So well done.
