Homesteading Booklice
Open drawer
Gideon Bibles covered with dust
Such are what greets one
In many a slummy motel.
Untouched
In many instances
The scriptures serve another purpose
Feast upon feast
For the booklice
These munchers of gold-edged pages
Enjoy their moments divine
Feeling eternal bliss
While in the bathroom…
The emaciated woman of suicidal desires
Draws her steaming bath water
While staring at her withered face
In a mirror of oh so many like images
All while the gray-haired peeping tom
Grimaces
Presses his eyes shut
Leans his head against the windowpane
Oh
God
The booklice pause their gorging
But not for long
Yes, Gideon sure was busy providing homes for booklice to move in on. I recall Bibles to be the only thing left in the drawers of motel rooms by previous guests and maintenance staff without being touched. Who had time to read when motel cable TV could provide you such debauchery?
