Ego's Birthday

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Like the biological vehicle in time that it straddles, the ego is capable of changing appearance but often ignores such an ability. Instead, opting to wallow in old impressions. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Ego’s Birthday

Ego caught itself

Standing before the mirror on its birthday

The day’s joyous and not so joyous reunion with the past

Was but another drifting ebb now

Washed up on the slime slick mudflats

Were straggled sinews of seasoned synaptic weeds

Running rampant webs through rusty containers of consumerism's regrettable rewards

While rotted prophylactics of minds' vulnerabilities

Succumbed to protected pleasures turned senile

Broken glass once reflecting youth

Now groveled to be remembered as antique

While wedged beneath the broken buoys of balance lost on oh so many impulsive bearings

Rested the shells and sand from Mistakes' endless storms

Try as it might in its momentary repose to project a sparkle here

Perhaps a treasure there

The gray-mossed skeleton that once filled the swimming trunks to paradise

Could only stare beyond the reflection back to the stars

Ego poised for yet another year

More highs

More lows

Just ebbs waiting to join

That endless flow called time

There's something to be said for ego. It is one of the primary drivers for natural selection that led to us during the time of hunting and gathering when we spread throughout the globe and only the very best survived.

Today, with organ transplants and plastic surgery we have gone far beyond ego to the point of selecting our own gender. Very interesting but devastating for perfecting the human race.

Ego's birthday indeed, Where does the ego lead us but as you suggest to "standing before the mirror, . . . in a joyous and not so joyous reunion." Not a very pleasant prospect. It's all about transcending the ego, climbing up over the edge of its horizon, that will lead us to a truer vision of ourselves.
