Threading Hunger's Needle

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today’s obsession with the Republican Party’s antics gives rise to an older poem. Why does it seem so many of those who appear lost are conservative in principle? Where has the growth of the mind’s hunger and the risk of failure gone to hide? It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf. - Walter Lippmann (Image by Getty)

Threading Hunger’s Needle

Acumen's voice smolders quietly
when deafened ears respond only
to discords of witlessness.

Wisdom's heat invites comfort,
its embers remain alive,
its wake of constant resolve
lifts vigils of swirling persuasion,
choking away illiteracy,
ignoring cross or sickle waved ominously.

Ever present

Creation's insight,
remaining airborne in a void for those
with causeless breath being held,
affecting not its surroundings
forever stale ether locked,
roiling chasms of fear
exuding odiferous spoilage,
rotting,
polluting,
repelling.

Such misery holds steady
among repeated indulgences of flesh,
the masses' quintessential reptilian skin
long overdue for shedding.

But cling it must,
this resistance to reflection and growth,
feeling safe in unknowing
the rewards of philo-logical pondering.

Sign and verbal,
touch and smell,
eye and ear,
an all-sensitive motion
making ready transference from literal
to ethereal possession.

For some…

A chosen distance is preferred,
a huddled observation from
deep in the abyss of ignorance,
self-importance perishing alone
amidst a cacophony of unresolved noise,
while wisdom's whisper
continues wanting to scream

into the threading of hunger's needle

languishes in space.

Both sides (and those who take sides) foment division. This has never changed since the beginning, and never will. So...a meaty question. What is wisdom? Does 'true' wisdom spring from the mind of man? Socrates said: "the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." That sort of makes sense to me, but is that wisdom? This country (this world) is in an escalating spiritual war. And this freaking insanity we're seeing will invariably lead to the emergence of a global autocrat. We've all taken a side. And depending on where a mans source of wisdom comes from will determine where they will be when it's all over and done. As an aside... I saw your son Jason in a Hyundai commercial. Was a bit surprised. I remember the first time I saw him in 'Little House on the Prairie' Thanks for your honesty here. I wish you well. rlc

Odin, this is great! In "Plato's Works", I read where the youth of his day wouldn't listen to the elders and rebelled. I believe history does repeat itself!

Love ya!

For eons families and tribes could trust their elders for restraint against the rash risk-taking of youth. But somehow, with the lengthening of age created by food and medicine, we have created a whole generation of senility that enters our politic young, vibrant and focused on the future, to become an established dynasty in the public eye now spouting backward old mother's tales of days gone by, long proven false by science.

And in the halls of academia, science and inquiry has raised collective wisdom so high that it is totally misunderstood by the hardening arteries and neurons of the elderly statesmen occupying seats till death do us part. Declaring that academia itself, has become, "A liberal, communist establishment, not worth paying any attention to."

But your poem tells it in fewer words. Where has all the wisdom gone?

"It requires wisdom to understand wisdom" and it required wisdom to write with wisdom. Only with inner reflection can we expect any kind of reasonable growth. A fine work here.
