Mirrors Never Sleep

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

There are few objects that have built-in memory. Mirrors are a peculiar entity in that regard, especially when they reflect sameness daily. Do they store?

Mirrors Never Sleep

An ode to a favorite haunt

I often wonder of its continued existence.

After the last patron staggered out into the cold,

After sharpening their knives,

Cooks and chefs hung their hats

Chairs trekked onto the tables,

A floor of peanuts got  swept up,

The broom took a lazy stroll into the closet

Waiters  kicked off their cushy shoes

Donning their oxfords,

The cat relaxed and delved into his

Chef-special-trout-for-feline,

The finished counting receipts,

The boss poured himself a snifter of brandy,

The shoed signs of exhaustion

Reflecting the mundane for a day,

Darkening gradually

As one of life’s daily sameness passed,

Awaiting next day’s duplicate reflection.

I think I have been in the place here fittingly described, although many places like this probably haven't survived this pandemic. May they be born anew.

Brought to mind something Pablo Picasso asked. "who sees the human face correctly: the photographer, the mirror, or the painter?" It would be a real blessing if we could wake up every day with the same fire we had when we started. Sadly, sameness gradually quenches those fires. An interesting lament. Thanks. rlc

You have created a new idea for the technology world to explore. Creating mirrors, like one-way mirrors were created in the past, that record everything seen in them. Similar to the way that ubiquitous cameras record our history now, but much more all-encompassing and timeless. Eventually archived in the cloud, so that the future of research into history would be in these real-time archives of times gone by.

It is certainly a brave new world we are entering. Every time I look at myself under my computer's harsh camera, I realize I have changed with time when compared to those cherub faced pictures of my early childhood. Never to return again.

A thought provoking concept which has got me thinking...
In this quantum existence, anything is possible!

Best wishes,
Diana...
