Beware...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

6/10/21 - Why is it we attempt to run in armored suits of experience, only to be duped by the seeming innocence of urban quicksand. Most of us are not as bulletproof as we think. (Image by Rolands Zilvinskis)

Poem Artwork

Beware…

several paces behind lurks the baggage of the past
often choosing to slither with poisonous tongue
ever hesitant to retreat
awaiting the moment to unpack for a stay

several paces ahead...

stands the mongoose of patience
ever saluting the tenacity of the encounter

remonstrating life's gallant stride

enter prospects of hope
the provider of measure
the perpetual start gate
for future unknowns

caution whispers…

beguilement of our present
where footsteps arch and hold before daring
to walk the razor edged macadam road
surrounded by bramble pillars of deceit

little wonder we suspend our flight of change
to that somewhere

often anywhere

for who has not wished to linger
with their wink at the threatening shadows
and forestalled a projection into the future
where all is promoted safe and warm

not knowing…

many succumb to such embraces

assuring our gullibility to escape
as we invite yet the next delusion
of time and space
past and future
that self-delusion provides as evaporative solace

Beware...

I am reminded of Alexander Pope’s words..
“Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread..”
The irony being that past experience
has led to imaginings of assured protection…
The guard is let down…when caution is
required…
foolishness or naivety?
Beware!

Diana…
