Impotent Reparations

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A reminder of a political season of certain voter rights being held hostage, it’s easy to argue some things never change. E.g., in a country drowning from ignoring basic principles, its soul chooses to not acknowledge the moral debt owed to so many. The least this country can do is let them vote. Impotent Reparations

Looking and Seeing

A mother of swirling black smoke bore you
Bundled in burlap
Atop burning earth's dust bowl

Before you

A life of sweat tainted tobacco leaves and cotton bales
Shrouded in tight braids of hate's acrid air

While above...

Above were only your father's cries of mercy
Filling the grit dense clouds
As Jim Crow rode the thunder
Looking down to make more the same
More swaddling to construe miscreant

Still

Painfully

Some of us
Considering history
Peer skyward
See the many blind eyes
Instead of stars
And remind ourselves
The past always sends forward its remains
To be a haunting presence
Helping us see
The importance we are truly looking at

Yes, and look at what one blithering idiot can do pretty much
all by himself while 330 million of us look on afraid to
kick his blubbery ass into oblivion.

No one can turn back time. These efforts by an embattled few who somehow think they are superior when they are not, will fail like all of the covering up of the past done nicely with fairytale history called Dixie and all that that implies.

It's time for the brutal times to be over and everyone have a free shot at the brass ring on the merry-go-round we call life.

"A haunting presence" indeed, as we continue to grapple with this problem today as in the past.
