Icy Passion

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Everyone has their limit. For mountain climbers, the limit is measured with patience. After these days of sorrow and regret felt by a lot of US citizens over Afghanistan, I’m reminded of the retreat I’ve sought many times in the rock and often hostile environment of the mountains. But for this now retired arm-chair climber, the memory of a strange kind of peace lives on… if only in my meditative retreat. One can only hope a similar kind of peace might visit the poor people of this land. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Icy Passion

View from on high,

Rising from the once birch and ash amidst

Pines’ shadow,

Vertical ice layers

Nature’s purchase,

Man’s challenge.

Down into the bowl,

Scree sprinkled deserts

Gather from barren lessor peaks,

Yesterday’s snow-clad mysteries.

Further down…

Swirling fall leaves

Sprinkle shimmering sun’s dalliance,

A fractal rainbow suspended terrace to terrace

Highlight the serpentine ascension

Where switchbacks carved the mountain sides

Having yielded long ago

Its blueberries and acorn foraging.

Still further down…

Creeping slowly,

The brambles,

Nature’s love thorn creepers,

Enfold meadow grasses thigh-high

Bend to wind’s call across the basin.

Finally…

Tundra’s home base,

Where a dog’s bark

Echoes up to

Mount Alberta’s pinnacle silence.

Breezes

Feather my precarious lullaby of dreams,

Making mystic rising dust,

Lavender fantasies,

Hovering over Fortress Lake’s misty fog.

Lights of dusk

From hamlets beyond

Signal early stars on high.

Keep safe this man,

As hands and feet

Seek bivouac rest before

Tomorrow’s climb into further unknowns.

I love adventure, going into the unknown, but mountain-climbing is definitely for others, not me, not those icy heights. I'll take the highlands instead.

You have brought alive what it must be like to experience the serenity of being so high on a rock face that you see everything below with such clarity and description.

It is a modern marvel how technology has allowed climbers to carry with them the means to bivouac on a mountain face. Or is it lower to them by rope so they don't have to carry it?

I really love this one, close to nature.

Life constantly poses challenges. Living demands courage. And how we deal with our challenges certainly will shed a clear light on who we really are. Uniquely written with imagery I relate to. Enjoyed. rlc
