Countdown

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Somewhere in all our heritage, there was the need or desire for immigration, usually into a better life. Can any land meet the Afghanis' expectations? Has America really met its expectation?

Countdown

Buried long amidst fear and repression,
a free world gazes at television screens in wonder,
refugees are the many of like mind,
so many of like purpose,
so many insistent on an unsure freedom.

Ironically,
those of rational mind,
their humanistic purpose,
their unencumbered dream of self-determination,
their tenuous health,
rests indubitably void of wealth’s trappings.

Perhaps…

It should be obvious to us,
these foreign country evacuees with raw needs and wants,
asking but for simple entitlements of civilized behavior,
that they might join the fraternity of decent humans
wanting only a growth void of repression and hate.

And yet…

Some would sit back and wonder
at our own silence of eruption,
our continued stifling of tremors below,
quashing the need for release.

Beware

For now

The glistening ducts of freedom’s “civilized behavior”

emits but muted cries down the face of truth,
forming tears of quiet guilt,
even while rejoicing
at the tenacity of another's courage.

To embrace one another,
to see abusive power destroyed,
to build a life imbued with love,
free from degradation and exploitation,
such is the goal of man's rights,
the humanistic permission to live freely,
to be whole,
to never know that countdown-feeling again.

Alas…

Truth be told,

we’re all dreamers.

The words on the Statue of Liberty should still apply.

In 1979, while I was teaching at Atlanta University, there was one Afghan MBA student. He was very intelligent and westernized, like the young man in the movie, The Kite, whose father had a Mustang that he treasured. While talking to this student, you couldn't tell him from any native-born American. He had no accent or ax to grind.

A pall came over the Middle East when the Moslem religion became moralistic, very conservative and right wing, fearing the rapid westernization in many countries, especially in the cities, becoming more like cosmopolitan cities with each year.

After the Ayatollah took over Iran, one Middle Eastern country after another succumbed to the strict and brutal rules of the Islamic state… Purposely mixing government with religion. Now that the young have access to the Internet, 40 years of oppression, will no longer be tolerated. The youth will throw the tight ass religious hypocrites out, given time. In the meantime, change brings chaos. It always has and it always will.
