The Mud of Experience

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To endure, it is argued that without having lived some relationship/career time in the trenches,
one risks never knowing and understanding the truth of survival. (Image by anonymous)

The Mud of Experience

Forever lost are the voices of fearless hope

and long gone are the rains that muddied the foundation

Even as we long for the innocence of heroic action

framed honors were not meant to be for some

and there remains only the mud of experience to nail on the wall

So say some of the dying

So say some wishing to escape the agony of living

Is home only found beneath the buttons of shielded resistance?

Can death be the only sanctuary from the insanity of fear?

Is one's true home but a place locked safely away

beneath some naked honesty known by only a few.

Might those who dare

to seek out that place

where stripped away layers of protection

saturated with the tears of elusive answers

find destiny’s compass pointing to yet another unexpected direction?

And is that direction

seen only by those whose open buttons

ravaged by wanderlust and the shedding of mud-caked insulation

leap from the twisted abyss with abandonment into another time?

What drives us to leave behind the habit of place and protection

to once again run, walk, and ultimately crawl

through barbed spirals of isolation

into those battlefields of the unknown?

Is it enigmatic, this home many seek

without assumed walls and roof

or fortified landscape?

And if home be the purpose of the journey

what validation allows entry?

Might the mud of experience

Open the door of answers

And allow new questions?

Perhaps…

Cogito, ergo sum

Beckons new beginnings

The ones without end…

Perhaps?

I find pieces like this fascinatingly thought provoking. Looking at people around the world, I see so many who completely miss the point of living and settle for a shallow dish of cold soup, while squabbling over dry bread.
Maybe that's an analogy that works...maybe not.
Somewhere I read:
"Life is the journey, not the destination. When you reach your destination, life's journey is over."
So the more we experience and the more challenging it is, the more of life we have ...makes sense to me anyway xx

For some, perhaps many, existence means grubbing out a life under very difficult circumstances. For those that survive, that "mud" of experience, stays with them much longer than the mud we normally quickly shed when stormy days bring a quagmire that we overcome.

When I come to think of it, I never really was stuck in the mud. Even during those nine months when I was supported by a loving family who encouraged me to get out into the real world once again. I consider that period of self-examination as a badge of what I am today. Not a tarnished one, but one of shining resilience.

Not the Rise and Fall of an empire and a world, but the fall and potential rise of an individual world. Civilizations, like people, rise and fall, but some people leave something behind for others to ponder. Well done.

As you mentioned: "I think therefore I am". Descartes. There is some truth in that. I believe Voltaire said that you should judge a man by his questions rather than his answers. But what a conundrum, getting to the end of your life with reams of unanswered questions. 'Perhaps' it's the balance we need between answering some questions and raising new ones that keeps an inquisitive mind healthy. Asking questions and finding answers to those questions (I believe) is what draws a creative mind forward. Thanks for sharing... r

Yes, the pretty little boys and girls who think they know it all--
Have never lived a bit of life in the muck and mire of strife--
Yet think they are entitled to the soft life where all their thinking counts--
Where experience is learning how to hate--
And never knowing why...
