Earning the Right...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

What’s it all about? Many live their lives never honestly pursuing the answer. Some, arrive at that point in time when all that’s left is coming to grips with the rat race one has endured and asking is there such a thing as…

Earning the Right…

Such a journey

This right to truly

See

Hear

And feel

The beautiful side of living

Even though the ugly

Doesn’t give up easily.

At some point

Everyone earns the right

To avoid the fast lane

Walk the path

Avoid more car crashes and explosions

And take in motion pictures of substance

Ignore celebrities

Cater only to work that has earned the right

To impact life in a positive sense

Consider…

Looking out the window

Letting your eyes dance along

With the swaying branches of wind-swept trees

Allow the soothing sound of the brook

Nestled in the shade of elm and oak

To calm the nerves of life’s past curses noise.

Seek out the touch

Of a rose petal’s caress

It’s layered comfort

Wanting only to relieve you

Of wanton infatuation with temporary love.

Yes…

To be at the crossroads of earning the right

Is indeed a hard earned gift

But one that everyone is capable of

Providing future time is not betrayed

Returning to the old ways

The very thing that gives one the right

To finally…

just be.

Indeed, we need to "just be" and nature herself "just is." As you suggest, we should learn out lessons from her; but we never seem to.

A kind of self-actualization (according to Maslow) where one leaves the madding crowd behind and can go on without the encumbrance of life's beaten paths of frustration. You and I have both earned it and certainly are enjoying it and the time we have left.

Seems everything in this life has an opposite. To "finally... just be" IMO, not only feels earned when the revelation is made, it also shows a kind of maturity that has risen above the mundane and the superficial. It's a good place to be. The Dalai Lama said: "Our purpose in life is to be happy. From the very core of our being we simply desire contentment." Certainly, there is some truth in that. But as it is, the struggle to attain contentment can take many decades. A fine and moving insight Kent. Bravo! r
