Mind-Cave of Fear

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Anything that kills our empathy, makes us evil. When we can’t feel the pain of another human being, we lose all kindness and good sense. We become monsters. Empathy is simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of “You’re not alone.” Perhaps the root of all evil is the absence of empathy?

Poem Artwork

Mind-Cave of Fear

Ghosts of experience
Pain once feared
Forever present
Lurks in one's mind-cave
Refracting light
Mirrored on all sides

Even while concealed beneath ethereal fog
Huddled with festering scabs of trust abandoned
Patience anticipates the hourglass of courage draining

Shades of agony
Parade in shadows
As sands of time and space
Await to trigger fear
Knowing such torturous weaponry
Remains far greater than pain itself

Easing forth as doubt and despair
Dread enters these reflective walls
Invisible to light
Empty of its own reflection
Its image but a moist acknowledgment
Atop the lip
Inside the arm's cavity
Beneath the groin

 Thus enters the mystical
Initiating birth of reverence
Impelling us to love the most
That personage who loves us most

Hence the eidolon rises
Hooking any and all on holy dread
From teachings unsolicited
By a lamb of duplicitous intent

Yet

Like the wolf we never see
The tornado never heard
The smoke without odor
Emotions too can be elusive
Even though never void of reality

For some

Feelings

Being of cognitive strength
Overcome such dominance
Evading emotion's fear
Breaking out from shackles and bars
Into rational passion's embrace
Where one's mind
Remembers well the once dank prison of fears
Now but yesterday's mistaken trust

Your poem challenged me to look up the 15 signs of empathy. To my surprise, empaths have difficulty with closeness and intimate relationships. They tend to prefer being loners rather than being swallowed up in a lot of intimacy. I won't tell you how I scored, mainly because I don't trust psychologists. If only we had a switch to turn things on and off...

Your poem cries out to those who have been misled into thinking that those one does not know are dangerous and should be feared and even hated. Ignorance does this. Your poem illustrates how, once we know these hated, we may find them very much like us, only suffering from loss of so much that we have taken from them that we should treat them with compassion and empathy.

Your photo of the young girl, unafraid by her naivety, approaching a grizzly is a good example of why we tend through our general naïve, but ignorant understanding to fear that which is not really dangerous.

That image freaked me a bit at first. Then I remembered one of the prophecies in Holy Writ about the Millennium- a time of unrestrained empathy between humans and animals. “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” Isaiah 11:6. Empathy seems almost non-existent anymore. Self-centeredness rules the day. Thankfully, the insanity in this world has an expiration date. Well done. Peace.... r

I so whole-heartedly agree. The lack and loss of empathy in today's world is stark and astounding, and well exposed in this thoughtful poem.
