Capriciious Wind

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

There is much challenging our sense of reality in a world in turmoil, but, what if: “We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything. That is all.” - Kalu Rinpoche, was a Buddhist lama, meditation master, scholar, and teacher.

Poem Artwork

Capricious Wind

Our aging world needs propping up

When the season brings cold and windy encroachment

Our delusional sets of home and barn

Buildings and forest growth

Shiver

Shake

 Unstable

As if but moments away from crumbling.

Such will bring about infinite space

Quietude supreme

Mystical stillness

Pyramid repose

Silence of the stars

Like astral flashlights

Of archeologists entering the crypts of kingship

Expecting divine intervention

With such imagination

The wind will pause

Will listen

Even the trees of weathered pain

Once crazed

Terror-stricken

Will wait out another false epilogue

While we grab onto a branch

With breath held

Expecting the world to end

Such a light breeze enters

A caress of trust

Reminding the living

That the state of still being

Is the determination of Nature

A sustainment for both humanity

And

The capricious wind

I like your Kalu Rinpoche quote very much. I like the expansiveness of this and “Our delusional sets of home and barn.” The fragility of mankind and the endurance of nature, especially trees — those temporary elements in the same space as the rootedness, but humans “Expecting the world to end/“. I will put the “…being nothing, you are everything” in my pocket and carry it around for a while. ~~ djl

It is interesting that I'm hearing the wind blow outside as I read your poem. We are to get 50 mile an hour winds on a clear blue day in about one hour, warning us to keep what is loose, tied down.

But you are writing about the wind as a metaphor for change. Change is always there, sometimes rushing loudly, and other times suddenly going the direction no one ever thought. Pointing out that all is illusion and the capricious wind will eventually change everything into drifting dust.

I like the way you use the wind was a metaphor with so much meaning for us to consider. Even if/when worlds end, a gentle wind will have us reconsider.
