Precarious Love

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We often address the word “love” as an undefinable and undependable phenomena of Man’s swashbuckling take on the emotions often realized through passion. Yet, there are many facets to this jewel of our emotional frame of mind. (Image by pinterest)

Precarious Love

For some
the garden is of carnivorous plants
saccharine seedlings once resting
becoming petaline flirtation
infatuation’s sweetness destined to betray

For others
even among the navigation of thorny defenses
the garden is of edible joy
the discovery of that which nurtures love's growth
the harvesting of passion's nourishment
the tranquil celebration of Emotion's singularity

How innocent we hoe the rows
cultivating anticipation
while the pistil's epicurean appetite
patiently welcomes nightfall
and the restful closing of its portals

And yes
the garden knows of dust storms
rendering flat once vigorous adventure
the thirst of parched hearts
the quench of a single teardrop of joy

But still
the enigma can offer little resistance to voracious winds
determined to reveal chameleon-like weeds
sprouting from cauldron-rich soils
invading Passion's tenuous resistance
seducing the trusting heart-gardener in us all

At least once

Love's penury will succumb
reducing blooms of flowered seduction
to Experience's gathering mulch
needing to know

the why of drought

the what of rejuvenation
the how of magic

Such is the challenge

Precarious Love

I dare say love is the uniquely unique precarious emotion that you so well describe here; but also precious, as Richard noted, when it arrives to stay. There is no accounting for its fickleness, but every accounting for its truthfulness.

Some unique imagery to support the premise. Speaking from experience: Every meaningful relationship can be tenuous and precarious. Once a couple has put down deep roots together, and becomes one plant (so to speak), overcoming one problem can often bring us face to face with another. The process seems endless. Love is precarious - yes - but its also precious. Especially when it's real. Enjoyed your thoughts Kent. Peace... rlc

I am going to need an excel spreadsheet for the growing list of vocabulary words in your writing cabinet; today’s is penury. I really like “How innocent we hoe the rows/cultivating anticipation.” The introductions you write truly set the house lights on your poetry; you have a keen ability there, as well as connecting human elements to other natural life forms. This is an expanse from your earlier writings of New York City life. Respect for nature makes great poetry. ~~ djl
