To personify a book with life of its own opens many doors of enigmatic conjuring. (Art by Rima Day.)

Poem Artwork

Book Life

Am I sentient,

Sapient,

Or

Some other form of sensitive life

Yet to be labeled.

I live a rather reclusive life,

Being invited out to a tabletop

Or bedtime lounging,

And even,

At times,

Brought along as

A vacation read.

There have been times,

However,

When I’ve been abused.

  Yes,

It happens to the best of us,

Even with cover sleeves,

Protection bookshelves,

Even occasionally slid into

Glass-door cabinets.

I’ve had my ears pierced with paper clips,

Layers of skin inked for study,

And extremities bent over and under out of shape,

All for the sake of a bookmark,

While some of my friends

I see getting fancy Barnes & Noble

Brass,

Silver,

 And inlaid markers.

Not fair

You know?

But…

Hey, no real complaints.

Just a few more years

And I’ll be on the auction block

At Christie’s.

Old, autographed copies

Are big business today,

And once ownership changes,

Those deep pockets provide

Cushioned surroundings.

Can’t wait for that day,

When I’ll move into

A hermetically sealed,

Temperature controlled

Retirement.

Not bad for an old, decaying book, eh?

If a book had an audible voice, I am sure this is what it would be saying. Its hopes and dreams, as it passes from hand to grubby hand and falls foul of less glamorous environments, dissolving into "Oh no please, not the public library!"

Quite enjoyed this vignette inside the life of a book. How I treasure my real-life books and given them the care and love they deserve. Well done, Odin.

Pleasure meeting this old, decaying book. I like how the sentient one is part of life, bedside, on vacation, and especially how the mishandling was described, “Layers of skin inked for study,” corners turned down. . . but I am sad the hopes of the ol’ Sapient is for hermetically sealed retirement. But then I guess one can be ‘loved to death.’. Just seems ‘loved’ is a good way to go. Great line: “It happens to the best of us,” for surely it does. A book that remains untattered, unbent, or soiled isn’t likely ‘the best’ book around. Enjoyable one, this. ~~ djl
