Reparative Space

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

No one is immune to the cost of love. Melody Gardot wrote and sang “Perhaps You’ll Wonder Why” and even before she wrote it, long before she wrote it, the journey of a relationship had a beginning that sadly abruptly ended 18 years later.
Such an experience. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l_aj-pdmWA

Reparative Space

Why must a heart break?

Is it for another’s sake?

Everyone knows a him,

A her,

A me,

All seeking that refuge

Where sound is as you need it,

Vision is as you wish it,

Touch is as you feel it.

In such a space,

A song may await

With affection’s reparative depth

Beside passion’s tenuous suspension,

Knowing love’s disappearance

Can transform into a cherished loss of worth.

Two places in this piece especially catch my attention: “Where sound is…..”and those three lines….”…as you feel it.” I like that trilogy. Secondly, “…a cherished loss of worth?”. That phrase is loaded with pleasure and pain. I differ with Ron’s take on “…as though you were standing on the highest point in your life.” The highest point can also be the most painful, and artists sing from there, paint from there, write from there. Then, into the ‘reparative space’ go the words from Melody Gardot, “No one makes a promise without knowing it can break.” Great find with that image, Odin.

What a melancholy, maudlin melody and lyrics. Not the kind of listening for moving on into a different kind of life without someone close by your side anymore. You must learn to be able to live alone.

None of those lost loves of mine have ever come back to me, so there's no use longing for them to come back. It is your self worth that is important, not worth associated with your attachment to someone else, no matter how cherished it was.

There are those who love you for who you are and will continue to be. Not what someone else made you. Remember that and write great poetry as though you were standing on the highest point in your life.

Ron
