Palette of Creation
How enriched came the images in yellow ochre,
His added cadmium yellow and chrome yellow
Thrusting his sunflowers beyond the canvas
Through our visual perception
Into our heart bellows
Gifting enriched breath
For those open
To his
Genius
For
Who
Can doubt
His craving to become
The very flowers he portrayed
The essence of a mind inordinate
A troubled soul’s generosity of spirit
Granting man’s behavior layered hope
Asking only respect for the palette of imagination
And never forgetting the price he paid to be who he was.
I have a disabled artist's sunflower, reminiscent of Van Gogh, hanging over the head of my bed, signaling bright sunshine looking down on me. When I saw it in the hallway at a conference for the disabled in Austin about 15 years ago, I saw it begging me to come and buy it. So I did.
