Overacting Happiness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With so many ways to distract our focus, is it any wonder many peer through coke bottle lenses and hold blinders tight to their heads, imploding with questions unasked… especially dealing with duplicitous behavior in relationships? ( Image by pinterest)

Overacting Happiness

How insufferable
The world’s audience,
That species of intellect
Repeatedly duped by the upstaging heart,
Where the mediocrity of life’s closing curtain
Renders reason and logic
A shadowy demise...unfulfilled in the wings.

Our species’ stage of many opening acts,
Where once major hits of mindful reward and achievement
Increasingly experience shorter runs,
Where losses are exorbitant,
Patrons of thought and debate
Made to feast on spoon-fed nourishment,
While their conditioned clapping habit
Continues to support false hopes of escape.

How tragic might this lack of understanding be,
Avoiding the unavoidable global tragedy,
Choosing to wallow in laughter and song,
Denying the mind’s inclusion as partner to the heart?

Might we be but an audience of escapees,
A populace of care-nots,
Of solipsistic narcissists
Ready to perpetuate a fast-beating heart’s demand
For the promised reward…
At any cost?

If heart-intoxicated, overacting happiness

Stupefies and silences our instinct to think,
Might we be missing something?

We might indeed be missing something, you so noteworthily ask at the end of your poem. An audience of escapees, a populace of care-nots is exactly what we have now roaming around in this world, their heads lost into the buzz of their phone technology, clicking "likes" and wishing to be "liked". What a world we live in, still expecting to achieve happiness.

You really hit home with this one. Life is not, "Cheers," but barflies think it is. It seems like everyone is seeking some form of escapism, especially with the poetry they write. Escaping into religion. Escaping into constant sorrow. Escaping into greed, hoarding and other forms of conspicuous consumption like giving lavish gifts in hopes of praise.

In the meanwhile, we are constantly at war. Just passed the largest US defense (war) budget so that we can continue to keep the world safe by providing more arms of war to the leaders of countries of dubious intention and even providing arms for household wars expected to come to our doorsteps, soon. I have seen so many have just simply given up taking any action and just, like Nero, are fiddling around for their own enjoyment with their bucket lists, while the world burns.

I have hoped the youth will see the danger clearer and began fixing things better than we have. For they are the ones in peril. We will have died.

As long as there are people taking advantage of the human minds capacity to escape taking note of tragedy, tragedy will be unavoidable. Anyhow beautiful and duoble-edged.

A thought provoking poem, Odin. I have learned (through a long life)grief is something that has to be acknowledged and a path that must be walked. There is no short cut to joy and peace.
