Platonic Intimacy

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Might it be time, given the lascivious nature of many of the failed relationships today, to consider the layered reasons for a bit more platonic love? As devised by Plato, Platonic love concerns rising through levels of closeness to wisdom and true beauty, from carnal inclination of individual bodies to attraction of souls, and eventually, union with the truth. Plato believed that love between people could be so strong as to transcend physical attachments.

Platonic Intimacy

To know that someone

Repeatedly accepts your vulnerabilities,

Recognizes intimacy has many layers,

Is to share the touch of the invisible,

The aura of body resonance,

Not from lustful satisfaction,

But as vibrations

Borne of mutual empathy for the assailable in each,

Begetting smiles of tearful joy shared by both.

It is to hear the sublime silence

Of unspoken words communicated

And the response given

In the same voiceless language,

While believing sharing platonic love

With souls precariously wounded,

Helps prepare to regain creation’s promised potential.

Still…

As the sixth sense implores you

To give of your gender-blind kindness,

To be the poultice to another’s wounded heart,

Providing strength for wisdom’s repair

And the dissolution of flesh-borne desertion,

Know that only then

Might one’s grieving solitary darkness

Provide inner- light for the morrow,

Create a renewed sense of levitational joy

Ready to attach, not by way of risk,

But by way of truth held firm,

Even as visceral pleasures

Continually remind one

Of mementos that might

Remain in regret’s

Shallow pool

Of stagnancy.

At some point…

We all need

The courage to embrace the ebb and flow of

Platonic intimacy for the sake of preserving

Authentic love.

This is not only a gorgeous poem, it's so true and wise. How can we really love someone we don't intimately know. Wonderful work.

Platonic intimacy is the most important part of a happy relationship. If you don't have that then it will not last for long. Good writing.

As I read, I was reminded of the type of love that I read about a long time ago while reading philosophy. While well aware of plutonic love, I looked up agape love, similar in nature. Turns out that it is mentioned once in the Bible in the Gospel of John.

I always love how deeply you write in a very plutonic way.

PS. I was mesmerized by the rare color of each of these young lady's eyes. I hope they weren't photoshopped for effect.

What a marvellous way have you gone about describing the utter potential of platonic love. Amazing that Plate himself, thousands of years ago, initiated the concept to begin with. While physical love holds the minutes and hours, platonic love has access to the treasure of forever.
