Maturity's Twilight Zone

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In childhood one wishing to be older. In middle life, one never takes off their racing shoes. In maturity’s years one questions the heart and mind as to the purpose of it all. Some would argue there are no boundary years, lines or chronicle embarking and disembarking measurements. Only the depth of one’s experience. (Painting by Jason deCaires Taylor)

Poem Artwork

Maturity’s Twilight Zone

With closed eyelids,

Darkness becomes light.

An intimate slumber lifts

The past into the present,

Into a lethargic

Yet

Levitational experience.

One is left hoping

The touching of the ground

Will take a bit longer,

Allowing the heady imagination

To make the landscape

Of one’s remaining years

Complete fulfillment,

Needing not the accouterments of everyday reality,

But the bonding of heart and mind

In their crossing of the Rubicon

Into maturity’s twilight zone of arrival.

I don’t know if I have understood this right, but it raised some thought. To me it’s a great description of the busy lifes of today and the gloryfied individualistic lifestyle that we get sucked into at a young age, it makes it hard to seek shelter in the collective when we have finally slowed down enough to start feeling lonely.

Curiosity was my first feeling from encountering Jason deCaires Taylor’s painting….wondering what your writing will entail. Then the term Twilight Zone primed me for something fearful, but it wasn’t at all like that, and levitational experience took the heaviness away. Lethargic was a great ‘mood’ word for the subliminal draw of past into present of ‘the closing chapter of life’ being gentle and complete. A drifting kind of poem, one I feel to be very ‘positive.’. Thank you ~~ djl

The progression into old age can be a beautiful experience, as clearly evidenced in this insightful poem. "Into maturity's twilight zone of arrival", indeed.
