Unlocking Hard Lessons

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The thought that we create the same lesson over and over until we learn it is never so pronounced as when misguided passion, whether in personal or business life, pauses and comes to its senses. (Image by Pineterest)

Poem Artwork

Unlocking Hard Lessons

No harm was meant.

No misgivings anticipated.

No proving something paramount.

But…

The lesson of allowing passion to confuse

Both the heart and mind

Returned again and again.

The parties involved

Refused to pause,

Pay close attention to the costs involved.

Money is not the issue

For a common factor for all

Whether rich or poor

Is the willingness to accept time

As a reality that waits for no one.

Perhaps…

The reality that everyone

Loses a bit of what they were day after day

Is evolution in motion,

Natural changes with purpose,

Wanting to arrest the impatience of the adamant.

To understand…

The past is but a key to unlocking a future,

To know the fit,

To know location,

To know when Time is right

And empathize with whatever crisis might occur

Is a result of

Perfection at work.

Accepting the price of happiness

Means accepting the lessons of the past,

To not drag the pain of mistakes as baggage into the next iteration

Of the happiness quest,

But to embrace the aura of understanding

That has finally given you the once-exhausted breath

To move on,

Knowing the smile of growth

Is often delayed by design.

Your poetry often wraps with the greatest notes in the orchestra of your vocabulary and the way in which you compose your works. I love that about your poems…it is the finish you have, as Salieri described Amadeus’ composition, “And then suddenly, high above it, an oboe. A single note, hanging there, unwavering.” ~~ djl

Few know the pain of starting over like you do. We all learn from our mistakes, but passion, as you describe, often overcomes good judgment for bad. But even the best intentions sometimes turn sour because they could be totally out of our control.

I recently made some bad monetary decisions. They aren't earth shattering, but very uncharacteristic of my shrewdness in avoiding painful situations by not entering into them. So glad that some of my infatuations didn't come true looking back at them. I hope it isn't the result of aging. As you seem to refer to in the poem, as we approach the end, all we can do is lose. For finding the courage and risk-taking necessary to continue to move upward, is no longer there.

Nicely done. Patterns are repeated until they are shed. And after that all you have to do is write about them once in a while to remind yourself how lucky you are that you are not in that situation anymore.

Indeed, there is something to be said for clearheadedness when it comes to making decisions and moving forward in life. Yet our emotions and their oft intensity often get in the way of our truest desires. We are supposed to learn from our mistakes, hopefully sooner rather than later.
